The Great Lakes State, the Mitten State or the Wolverine State. No matter how you refer to Michigan, you know that this part of the country has some great features that set it apart from every other state. So as the weather warms up and we welcome vacationers to our state, let's share our favorite things about the place that we call home.

When you live somewhere for too long, you often forget about the little things that make that place unique. It's usually not until after you leave home that you realize Michigan is it's own special place. To celebrate all the great things our state has to offer, here are a few reasons to help you remember why living in Michigan is amazing.

The Weather

We know, it's something we love to complain about. But where else can you experience all four seasons in the same week? Our unique weather is always a great conversation starter.

Going Up North

Do you know anywhere else where you can vacation in your own state? Venturing up north and experiencing the quiet surroundings with family and friends is a pastime for many.

The Festivals

Across the state, you'll find a celebration for just about everything, like Tulip Time1 in Holland, the Coast Guard Festival1 in Grand Haven and Michigan Challenge Balloonfest1 in Howell, to name a few.

The Beaches

With over 3,100 miles of shoreline,2 a day at the beach is always possible. Plus, you're guaranteed to find some interesting items that have washed up on shore.

Pasties

Make a meal out of a bunch of random stuff crammed in a flaky crust. You can easily spot the out-of-towners when you hear their pronunciation of this iconic Michigan food.

The Auto Industry

Having a love of cars is something you're taught at a young age. Most of us can agree that we have a deep respect for the work that goes into the creation of each vehicle.

The Great Lakes

You're never more than 85 miles away from any of the Great Lakes2 and you understand that each lake is unique in some way. You know that learning to swim isn't just something you do for fun in Michigan, it's a necessity.

Euchre

Break out the cards! A family gathering without at least one round of this card game is completely unheard of. It's like a rite of passage for new family members to learn how to play Euchre.

The People

It's okay to poke fun at people from different areas of the state. You know what a Yooper and a troll are and love to confuse people from out-of-town when you use these terms.

Playing Outdoors

It's possible to do just about any outdoor sport. With the diverse landscape and the weather that constantly changes, there's always something to do outside.

Paczkis

There's a special day for this sweet delicacy. You know how to pronounce paczki and you can name off your favorite fillings.

Always Having a Map

We definitely live in the state with the most interesting shape. You can use your hand as a map and it's perfectly acceptable to do so

The Bridge

There's something magical about driving over the Mackinac Bridge. It feels like you're entering a foreign land on the other side, even though it's still beautiful Michigan.

The Scenery

You're surrounded by a plethora of different landscapes. From the rushing water at Tahquamenon Falls, to the beautiful colors at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, there's always something to see or do.

As annoying as the weather is, there's truly no place like this state. What are some of your favorite things about Michigan?
